What is manual therapy?

Manual therapy is a hands-on physical therapy technique that is used to treat muscle aches, joint pain, and limited range of motion. A few different manual therapy methods may be included in your physical therapy program or treatment plan.

Types of manual therapy techniques

Soft Tissue & Joint Mobilization

After an injury, soft tissue and joint mobilization may be what you need. It focuses on encouraging the movement of the injured parts of the body, such as dysfunctional joints and strained muscles. It promotes movement using gentle pressure and slow movements to activate joints and relax muscle tissue. Soft tissue and joint mobilization can help bring back mobility.

Strain-Counterstrain

Strain-Counterstrain is a form of physical therapy that is used for treating spastic muscles. It is used to restore mobility in and decompress tissues that have been under a lot of pressure due to an injury. During strain-counterstrain, you will have to hold a specific position for around 90 seconds and then release it.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a type of massage technique utilized in manual therapy to help break up tissue bundles. When bundles of soft tissue become a source of pain, they may need to be broken up. This can help to get rid of the pain and increase your range of motion.

What can manual therapy treat?

Manual therapy is an important part of a physical therapy treatment plan. It can help treat a multitude of issues, including:

  • Adhesive capsulitis
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Shoulder stiffness/limited range of motion
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Pinched nerves
  • Limited joint range of motion
  • Capsule tightness
  • Postsurgical stiffness
  • Much more
