Pain originating at our “butt” bones, behind/sides of the knee, and anywhere in between can indicate a hamstring injury. First, let us discuss a bit of the hamstring anatomy and its function in our daily life.

Three Muscles That Make up the Hamstring

  • Biceps Femoris
  • Semitendinosis
  • Semimembranosus

The three muscles originate at the ischial tuberosity, commonly referred to as your “butt” bones, and insert below the knee on your tibia and fibula. The hamstring’s primary function is to flex your knee and assist in extending the hip. The hamstring has a primary role in walking, jumping, and running during everyday activities.

Who can experience a hamstring injury?

Since the hamstring has such a primary role in our everyday life, it can become a common source of injury not just in athletes but also in non-athletic populations. Different injuries that can occur are:

  • Sudden and acute strains in the muscle fibers.
  • Acute or chronic Tendonitis/osis.
  • Injuries to the tendons where the muscle originates at the hips or inserts at the knees.
  • Low back pain.
  • Due to decreased flexibility and tightness in our muscles causing increased rotation at the hips.
